Asoka Bharath Darshan

Second review - scroll down for earlier

This is a hex box of Bharath Darshan by Asoka Trading. [2024 comment: Asoka are now trading under the Bharath Darshan name. Reader Vid, who has started their own incense blog,  Ratnagandh, says in their review of Bharath Darshan, that Asoka source their incense from Darshan International.]

I love this incense. It's musky and sweet with vanilla and some highly perfumed floral notes which apparently come from kewda, a distillation of the fragrant male flower of the pandanus plant. I want to explore more incense by this company as it's the sort of stuff I love for everyday incense burning.

First review

Part of a pack of six different boxes each containing eight sticks, bought cheaply from a gift shop. The boxes do not give any information of the maker, though the inside wrapper says Asoka Trading Co. One of the boxes says Made in China, though Asoka are based in Bangalore. One of the boxes is trade marked as Shashi Industries. The sticks are all made the same - very neatly rolled charcoal and sandalwood paste onto pink dyed bamboo sticks, and then dipped in perfume. These are your standard everyday budget sticks in which there is little sense of the named scent, and what you mainly get is the aroma of the burning base material.

According to The Incense Man, the name means Pilgrimage to Ancient India. There is camphor and bees wax furniture polish aromas on the stick, along with some floral, mainly rose, notes. Ooh, this is pleasant when lit. Coconut and vanilla. Quite creamy and sweet and inviting. This is their own scent mix, and it appears to be their most popular stick. The aroma is certainly the best of the pack, and is flexible enough to be used in various places at various times. It can be used as a cheerful daytime scent to waken up and refresh a room. It's good stuff.
