GIRI Namo

GIRI is an Indian online shop specialising in bhakti (religious devotion) supplies. It is based in Chennai in Tamil Nadu, though doesn't make incense itself, so sources from incense factories across India, such as Aadinath Enterprises of Ahmedabad, and Parimal of Bangalore, which it sells under the Namo brand name. As with Mangaldeep, they show on the packets who has made the incense for them.

They sell standard machine-extruded perfumed sticks for everyday use. They have the familiar scent of synthetic aroma compounds, but are decently made room fresheners.

  1. In india, for all packaged products you are legally obligated to mention the name and address of:
    1. The manufacturing company/entity
    2. The marketing company
    3. The importing company (if applicable)

    1. Interesting. This law doesn't apply to goods sold loose, or simply wrapped in paper, such as those from Vrindavan and Pushkar?
And how about the incense sold in Goa by Ramakrishna and Shekhar, who only put their shop address on the label?

    3. Hey Steve XD
I dont plan to restart the blog any time soon - juggling a lot of things in my personal life right now.

As to your above questions - if I understand correctly, this law applies to pre-packaged goods. If you have a shop with bundles of different types of incense, and you sell to customers based on the quantity or variant they require, and you remove from those bundles and package it after you have received the order, you dont need to mention the details on the packaging.

But if you are packaging and displaying the products in your shop before a customer even arrives - like having 100 boxes of 10gms of sandalwood incense in each, you need to mention thesl details on the outer packaging.

And it's not just manufacturing or marketing companies details, you also need to specify the weight, MRP (max retail price), mfg date and best before date although im not sure if the last two apply to every prepackaged product.

    4. A number of people have told me that Goloka currently do not make their own incense. That another incense house in Bangalore makes it for them. But the packets do not show that someone else makes it for them. Are there ways that company's can get around the law?

    5. I'm sure there are. One way is to simply ignore the law. As I suspect Ramakrishna and Shekhar must be doing. They dont sell loose incense. Their shop has incense that is already prepacked in specific quantities. So they must print MRP, weight and manufacturing/marketing details. If they dont, they are flouting the law.
BTW if Goloka is sourcing incense from artisans or individuals who do not want their name and address published on the packaging, Goloka can claim it as their own manufactured product.

I'm NAL btw. This is only my understanding and observation.

    6. I like this law - it makes sense. The consumer gets to know who made the incense. But if the maker (be it a woman in her own house, or a large incense factory) do not want to be identified, then the law doesn't force them to be named.

  2. GIRI also has Masala sticks, like their Ketakipushpa which is till date my fav Kewda incenses.
