Fumino Coconut

Second review - scroll down for earlier

I've just reviewed  Temple of Incense Coconut Dream, and I got this out to compare it. So I thought it would be useful to have a proper re-review. It presents as a standard Bangalore masala incense, though we don't know which Bangalore incense house, other than it is third generation.

The scent on the stick is soapy, waxy, white wood, perfumed, complex, shifting, touches of green apple. It smells kind of wrong, but is also quite fascinating.

The scent on the burn is also curious, and a bit left wing. There's coconut - a sort of earthy, raw, rough, hairy coconut shell. And at times it has this waxy chemical note, like paint. Yeah, the smell is like coconut paint!  There's wood and twigs and white chocolate. It's odd, yet holds together, and ends up being an interesting and compelling incense. I like it.

I think a mono-scent coconut can make for an interesting incense, though not necessarily in the direction  that most people would think of. While still liking this, I'm not quite as charmed as I was during the first review. I guess some of the novelty has worn off....

First review

The scent on the stick is fresh, lively, quite juicy, compelling spice notes, woods, grass, bananas, alcohol, tobacco. A fascinating melange. There's a vague sense of coconut as well, but not bang on. I think the coconut scent has been created out of other scents, and it hasn't quite worked, but it has produced a clash and clamour of scents which puts me in mind of the poetry of Gerard Manley Hopkins, particularly The Leaden Echo and The Golden Echo

The fragrance on the burn is equally complex and fascinating, though points more clearly toward coconut. It's a somewhat beguiling and seductive scent - a musky, sweet base leading up to some joyful fruit and floral notes. It is somewhat crude and brash with its clearly synthetic fragrance oils, but that is part of its charm - those rough edges are very compelling, and give spice to what might otherwise be an everyday commercial sweet coconut scent. I like this.
