Calmveda Indian Sandalwood incense from an Om Meditation pack of five different scents for £8.50. Calmveda was founded by a young business graduate in May last year (2023). It's perfumed incense using recycled temple flowers in powdered form as a combustible material in place of charcoal. As with using wood powder, there is an odiferous element which comes through in the burn. It's each to their own - I know some people either don't mind, or actually like the smell of smouldering plant matter, but I prefer the odiferous material in incense to be attractive or interesting. I find smouldering wood powder or flower powder to smell either like burning paper or burning damp plants in the garden. I love the eco-friendly aspect of reusing the flowers. I'm less keen on the off-scents. That said, these Calmveda sticks don't have the off-notes that Phool sticks have.
The unwarmed scent on the stick is floral and woody. Beeswax. Freezer ice. Shoe polish. For those too young to be familiar with shoe polish, it has a sort of turpentine, sweet pine, waxy kind of scent. The scent on the stick is room freshener synthetic sandalwood. It is acceptable and moderately pleasant.
The warmed scent on the burn has got the flower powder to deal with, so there's some awareness of smouldering plant material. A little like damp grass being slowly burned on a bonfire. On top of that are some vague warm woody/floral perfume notes which sometimes hints . Nothing specific. It's not an unpleasant scent at all. But it doesn't really lift. On the whole a reasonably pleasant perfumed-incense room freshener. Not offensive. Buy this as your room freshener and you are helping to save the planet. And, while the packaging is not as beautiful, I find these sticks to be more attractive, and cheaper, than Phool, who also recycle temple flowers. The scent is warm, woody, sweet, herby, honeyed, notes of camphor. It is a likeable scent which has grown on me, and which lingers pleasantly and cleanly for hours afterwards. This is OK.
