Baieido Tokusen Kobunboku

Bought on eBay as a trial pack, this is related to Baieido Kobunboku Regular in that it is a plum blossom incense, though the "Tokusen" suggests that this is a "special selection", and the eBay seller Shi indicates that these sticks contain agarwood. How much agarwood I don't know, but there is a fairly neutral scent on the stick - some black pepper, dusty attic room, fresh cardboard.

The scent on the burn is warm floral plum. Mildly sweet, some spice, subtle, faint woods. It's an attractive scent, though not quite attention grabbing or delicious enough to retain attention. It's quite pleasing to burn in the room and have the scent occasionally drift across. And it would be a pleasant scent to pass around among friends while playing a scent game because the scent is discreet, and is best viewed up close. I have burned the regular Kobunboku a few times. I liked it more on first visit than subsequent, and I understand that. It's a pleasing scent, fresh, mildly floral, mildly fruity, mildly woody, but it's not an interesting fragrance accord. It simply exists, like an apple or a tree bark. In the scent game one could cut a fresh apple or break off a piece of tree bark and pass it around with the same results. This is not a developed or intelligent fragrance accord. It is simply a pleasing one. It doesn't excite, interest, or reward. So while I like it now, I can see that it's unlikely to retain my positive attention for long. However, at this moment I like it, and I am pretty sure I like it more than the regular Kobunboku, though I don't have those sticks to hand to compare - though I think it would be interesting to make that side by side comparison.

I note from Japanese reviews that Kobunboku is considered Baieido's signature product - a popular "daily" incense which is sold in a number of varieties, including this "special" version.  Available on eBay in a box of around 130 sticks for £21.40 plus postage.
