HEM sticks can often be scruffy and messy, leaving charcoal dust on the fingers. And the scent on the stick is a little sharp and volatile, smelling of alcohol powered fragrance. The fragrance is quite sweet and floral, edging toward violets.
The scent on the burn is delicate, sweet, fragranced, floral with a hint of violets and vanilla. I wouldn't say it was like jasmine, but then, Egyptian jasmine is different to Indian jasmine: "Origin influences the nuance: Indian jasmine is greener and more herbaceous, while Egyptian jasmine is sweeter and honeyed." This makes a very pleasing room freshener and more. It creates an attractive and welcoming atmosphere in the house. I like it.

I've looked at my review from earlier this year, and I think I was being particularly harsh to score this as a 16. Though it is possible that some of the chemical volatility has evaporated since May, so I'm now getting more of the fragrance that I should. Having said that, I do pick up now and again some sharper notes, which incline toward Indian jasmine, which for me tend to contain an awkward balance between creamy and citric setting up an uncomfortable olfactory tension. Yeah, there's the occasional troublesome moment, though on the whole this edges enough toward the everyday pleasant, and it leaves a winsome fragrance in the air.

The delicate white jasmine flower loves the Egyptian climate, and the rich soil. It has grown in Egypt for thousands of years, and was prized by the ancient Egyptians for its purity, and as a symbol of eternal life and resurrection. That link with the ancient Egyptians is displayed on the packet with an image of Tutankhamun's funeral mask.
All that lovely association and imagery is somewhat spoiled by the intense chemical nature of the scent on the stick. It smells like a toilet cleaner solution. But it has some sweetness and musk. Raspberry jam, marzipan, almonds, musk, and violets. There's a lot of promise here, once away from the chemical sharpness. Those who dislike perfume dipped incense, and especially HEM dipped incense, will absolutely loath this. They best stay away. Those who like HEM will be somewhat seduced by the exotic and beguiling blend of scents used here.
The burn is somewhat variable. It splutters between the sharp chemical and the delicate floral musk notes on the stick. I can pick up the promise, but am somewhat disturbed by the metallic chemical notes. I can go either way with HEM. If it's a glass half empty day, I can hate it. If its a glass half full day I can love it. Today I am on a knife edge. There's an attractive blend of fragrance notes here. But the synthetic nature of the scents is just too dominant for me, and while I am not exactly appalled by this, I am disquieted by it. It's like a grunting shit splattered pig that someone has spayed with Chanel No 5. Odd and unsettling.
