Balaji Musk

A simple cheap as chips perfumed-charcoal incense, but it is balanced and harmonious with no harsh notes. Bought from Popat Stores for £1.25 as part of their deal of six packs of a generic scent for £1.25, and they send whichever brand they have. At time of writing the brand is Zed Black. It's a bargain - it's wholesale prices.

Despite the low price this is a well made incense. The sticks are machine-extruded charcoal on a plain bamboo splint. 9 inches long with 7 inches of perfumed charcoal. They burn for around 50 minutes. There are 20 sticks per old fashioned hexagonal pack. I have a mild nostalgic fondness for hexagonal packs (and even more fondness for tubes), though I associate them with basic single-scent perfumed-charcoal rather than anything modern, exciting, or top quality. I can't recall having a masala incense in a hexagonal packet (though there are probably some).

This does what it is expected to do. The scent on the stick is a crisp menthol volatility - quite chemical, and not endearing. However, when lit (hungry flame, black smoke until blown out) the scent is warm and modestly pleasant. There is a generic synthetic musk scent following a narrow course. It's not harsh. it's not unpleasant. It's not offensive. It is warm, modest, musky. I don't love it, but I like it. Useful as a dirt cheap low key everyday incense, or in the outhouse keeping the cats company as they eat.
