Temu (Shamen Ha'Zhong) Al Cao Xlang (Wormwood)

Out of curiosity I randomly ordered off Temu a bunch of Chinese incense from small, local incense makers. I was curious about Temu, about the sort of incense that would arrive, and about local Chinese incense. This Wormwood incense (20g for £1.04 at time of purchase) is made by Shamen Ha'Zhong (?) of Tong'an, Xiamen in Fujian, China. I know nothing about them, nor even if I have given their name correctly. But in my searches I did find that these sticks were for a time imported into Germany by MFunke.

Wormwood, known for its bitter qualities, is an uncommon incense fragrance. It appears to be used more for its spiritual qualities than for its fragrance, though I did enjoy the Fumino Wormwood, which did have a pleasing aroma. The incense is made from "70% wood powder  30% sticky powder". The "sticky powder" is likely to be joss powder. My assumption is that the wormwood scent would be from a woodworm oil with which the sticks are impregnated.

There is little scent on the stick. The scent on the burn is mostly smouldering wood as the base, with herby, slightly bitter, but also quite resinous middle and top notes which travel further than the wood base. There is a scent similar to smoking joints made out of marijuana - the grass form, rather than the hashish resin form. It's not thrilling, but I do like it. It's earthy, quite bold, green, and quite juicy. Yeah, it has grown on me.
